Designer & Maker
Hello, and welcome to South by North Designs.
I am a wood furniture designer / maker and an oceanographic engineer. Since 2022 I have been living a nearly-antipodal life between Massachusetts, USA, and Tasmania, Australia, toting my hand tools back and forth across the globe.
I craft high-quality pieces that are meant to see regular use and enjoyment. I have an attention to detail that allows my pieces to stand out, and as a lifelong learner I enjoy creating designs that challenge my skills. I am also passionate about living and working with intention, sustainability, and the goal of enriching the lives of others through sharing my knowledge of this craft.
The inspiration for my work comes from all aspects of my life, but especially the more wild places in this world and the places where I have lived, both in the northern and southern hemispheres, on land and at sea.
My current work continues to explore new approaches to furniture design and building. Most recently, I have been working with hand tools and steam bending to incorporate curves and natural surfaces into my pieces, and I have just started to scratch the tip of the iceberg in learning stereotomy, a centuries-old drafting technique that allows visualization of complex 3-D geometries in 2-D drawings.
