Huon pine, Tasmanian blackwood, shellac finish, hide glue
The design for this plastic bag dryer honors the natural shape and beauty of the Huon pine base piece and compliments it with hand-shaped Tasmanian blackwood “spines” carefully arranged, angled and octagonalized for functionality and subtle elegance of form. Its concept sprang from a simple need: I wash and reuse my plastic bags and wanted a better way to dry them that was elegant, tidy and functional.
Within my broader practice, this work was an opportunity to both reset and kick-start my woodworking routine upon moving back to Tasmania in 2025. I used this piece to explore a new design aesthetic and approach while honing my hand tool and greenwoodworking skills and creating a deeper appreciation for the natural forms that I have often erased from wood when I have machined pieces flat in the past.
