Cherry, Osmo finish
This dovetailed planter box was my first furniture project as a student at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. Our assignment was to design, draft and build a piece of furniture with hand-cut dovetails, mortises and tenons. I designed this piece to contain the square self-watering planter in the photo. Cherry wood was selected for its aesthetics and for its ability to hold crisp hand-cut joinery. The side panels were cut from a single board to wrap the grain patternaround the box. There are two slats mortised inside the bottom to serve as the box floor while allowing for air flow below the planter.
